What is Juglans regia?
Juglans regia, also known as the English walnut or common walnut, is a deciduous tree native to central and southern Europe, the Caucasus, and southwest Asia. The Juglans regia tree grows to a height of 20–35 m (66–115 ft), with a trunk up to 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in diameter. The leaves are pinnate, with 5–23 leaflets, each leaflet 3–8 cm (1 1⁄4–3 1⁄4 in) long and 2 cm (3⁄4 in) broad. The flowers are borne in catkins; the male flowers are yellow-green, while the females are pale greenish-yellow. The fruit is a drupe, 3–5 cm (1 1⁄4–2 in) long and 2 cm (3⁄4 in) broad, enclosed in a hard shell; it ripens in September or October.Juglans regia has been cultivated for centuries for its edible nuts. The nut kernels can be used fresh or dried and ground into a flour for use in baking or other recipes. Juglans regia extract is also used commercially as a flavoring agent in foods and beverages. Juglans regia capsules are available as a dietary supplement.
