What is Passiflora incarnata?

Passiflora incarnata, also known as maypop, is a herbaceous vine native to the southeastern United States. The vine produces white, purple, or blue flowers and has a passionfruit-like flavor.

The leaves and roots of the plant are used to make medicine. Passiflora incarnata is most commonly used for anxiety and insomnia. It is also used for conditions that cause muscle spasms such as epilepsy, hysteria, and tetanus.

Other uses include treating gastrointestinal disorders such as colic and indigestion; respiratory disorders such as bronchitis and whooping cough; and cardiovascular disorders such as high blood pressure and palpitations.
