Spirulina (Arthrospira Platensis) is a unicellular, blue-green alga, sister of chlorella. It has a spiral shape, a size of no more than a few microns, grows both in fresh and salt water, and is one of the most researched plants on the planet.
Spirulina is a type of blue-green algae that is a good source of nutrients, including:
- Protein: 50-70% of its dry weight
- Lipids: 6% of its dry weight
- Carbohydrates: 7-14% of its dry weight
- Vitamins: A, B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, D, E, K, pantothenic acid, biotin, and folic acid
- Minerals: manganese, copper, iron, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, and calcium (26 times more than milk)
- Essential fatty acids: omega-3 and omega-6
- Antioxidants: chlorophyll, which helps to detoxify the body and strengthen the immune system
- All 8 essential amino acids
